Why in the World Did You Choose Pelvic Floor PT?

It usually comes out somewhere around the second or third visit. A patient gets comfortable, the conversation loosens up, and then, half-laughing and half-apologizing, she asks:

"Okay, I have to know. Why in the world did you choose... this?"

We get it. Of all the specialties in physical therapy, we picked the one that involves talking about pee, poop, sex, and everything else you have been taught to whisper about (or never mention at all). Nobody blinks when a PT says they work with athletes or help people recover from knee replacements. Say "pelvic floor" at a dinner party and you can watch people mentally calculate how fast they can change the subject or leave the room.

So if you have ever wondered why someone would choose this specialty on purpose, you are not being rude. You are being honest. And you are definitely not alone.

Why Does Everyone Ask This?

Believe it or not, pelvic floor physical therapy is still a mystery to most people. Most of us did not grow up hearing about it, most doctors never bring it up, and health class certainly never covered it. Plenty of women only discover this field exists after years of being told their symptoms are "normal," "just part of being a woman," or "what happens after you have kids."

We have written a lot about this, because the list of things women are told to simply accept is a long one: leaking when you sneeze, pain with sex, feeling "stuck" no matter how much fiber you eat, or a heaviness that no one seems able to explain. (If you have ever wondered about any of these, our Is That Normal? Urinary Health Edition and Is That Normal? Bowel Function Edition posts were written for you.)

So when a patient works up the courage to ask why we chose this field, there is usually some real curiosity underneath the joke: Who signs up for this on purpose?

Here is the honest answer: we did. Enthusiastically. And even though the question always feels a little awkward to ask, it is one of our favorite questions to answer. Because every single one of us has a story, and most of those stories started in the exact same chair our patients are sitting in.

First, a Note from Dr. B

Before we get to the team, a little context from our founder on how this group came together:

"Specializing in pelvic health was such a personal decision for me. I threw myself wholeheartedly into research, education, courses, and mentorship, determined to translate my experience as a physical therapist into this new specialty. When it came time to expand my team, it was my top priority to find doctors who were highly skilled, dedicated to continued learning, and wildly passionate about helping women heal. I ONLY hire PTs I would trust to be my own physical therapist. I'm so grateful and proud that each team member has checked all those boxes and so many more."

In other words: nobody ended up here by accident. We asked our team to answer the big question the way they would if you asked them face-to-face, sitting across from them in the clinic. Here is what they said.

Dr. Angela: She Was the Patient First

“Pelvic floor physical therapy changed my life, literally. Before I ever considered specializing in this area, I was a patient who had run out of answers. I had seen multiple doctors and tried countless treatments, but it wasn't until I experienced pelvic floor physical therapy that I truly felt hope again.”

That experience is exactly why Dr. Angela's patients trust her with the things they have never said out loud to another provider: she remembers what it feels like to sit on the other side of the room. These days, she dedicates much of her time to patients facing fertility challenges, including women who have endured heartbreaking losses, multiple rounds of IVF, or years of never seeing a positive test. In her words, "There's nothing more meaningful than seeing a spark of hope return to a fertility patient's eyes, especially after all they've been through." Her passion is a big part of why we offer Mercier Therapy here in Kansas City, and why posts like You Are Not the Reason exist.

Dr. Meg: Done with Not Being Heard

“When I started sharing my experience with other women, I realized I wasn't alone. So many of us have 'mystery symptoms' that we're told are 'normal' or 'just part of being a woman.' That realization became my turning point.”

Before she specialized in pelvic floor, Dr. Meg once asked a provider whether her new mood swings could be related to her IUD and was quickly told, "There's no way they're connected." Something didn't sit right with her. That interaction led to a longer road of having to advocate for herself, which led to the desire to be part of a bigger solution in women’s health. One patient she will never forget came in with a symptom that started in pregnancy and never went away, brushed off by every doctor she had seen. After their very first session together, the patient came back in tears: it was the first relief she had felt in over a year. As Dr. Meg puts it, "The pelvic floor holds more than just physical tension; it holds emotion, fear, and stress. When we begin to honor that mind-body connection with compassion and curiosity, true healing begins.”

Dr. Rachel: "Women Are Magic"

"…plain and simple: I think women are magic. Our bodies are capable of incredible things, and it's such a gift to help women overcome symptoms that have been holding them back from feeling like their true, authentic, powerful selves.”

What fuels Dr. Rachel is watching how quickly the right treatment can change someone's life. One of her favorite moments is the second visit, when a patient looks at her in disbelief and says, "You're a miracle worker, I'm cured." But she never forgets how much courage that first appointment takes. In her words: "Talking about 'TMI' topics isn't easy, and we never take that vulnerability for granted." Her goal is to meet every patient with compassion, understanding, and a sense of humor when it's needed most, because healing starts with feeling safe.

Dr. Bethany: The C-Section That Started It All

“One of my greatest passions is working with clients affected by physical or emotional trauma. I understand the importance of compassionate care and meeting my patients where they are, moving at their pace toward total body healing and recovery.”

Dr. B came to pelvic health through her own journey with pelvic floor tightness, something she did not fully understand until pregnancy and her recovery from a scheduled C-section. (She assumed she was taking the "easy way out." Boy, was she wrong.) That experience opened her eyes to how little information women are given about their own recovery, and it is why she built Well + Core around education, prevention, and compassionate whole-body care that moves at each patient's pace. Her favorite moments are often the simplest ones, like a patient walking in beaming to announce, "I went on a run and didn't pee!” She has shared much more of the story (along with Dr. Angela) in our first podcast, How we ended up here: The real stories behind Well+Core.

Blaire: The View From the Front Desk

"I had three kids and didn't even know pelvic floor PT existed until after my third. Now I watch women walk out of here with their lives changed. You can't be part of that and not become passionate about it."

Blaire, our office administrator, has the unique vantage point of seeing every patient's journey from beginning to end. She has watched women cry tears of joy at their first visit, finally feeling seen, understood, and reassured, and again at their last visit, feeling strong, pain-free, and empowered. What moves her most is watching patients realize they never had to just "live with" their symptoms.

Yes, even our front desk has a pelvic floor story. That is kind of the point.

The Common Thread

Five different people. Five different paths. But if you read those answers again, you will notice the same thing running through every single one: at some point, each of us needed the kind of care we now provide. We were the ones searching for answers, feeling dismissed, wondering if what we were experiencing was "normal."

That is the real reason this question is a joy to answer, awkward or not. We did not stumble into pelvic floor PT. We were pulled into it by our own bodies, our own frustrations, and the realization that women deserve so much better than "just live with it."

When you understand your body, you are equipped to heal, thrive, and live more fully. Every one of us has lived that experience in one way or another, and we are passionate about bringing that same experience to every patient who walks through our doors. We each came to pelvic health for different reasons, but it all goes back to empowering women. Whether you are dealing with a chronic condition, navigating trauma, or just tired of feeling like the healthcare system is not giving you answers, you are the reason we are here.

So please, keep asking us why we chose this. We promise the answer is never awkward for us. It is our favorite story to tell.
